The Importance of Your Tribe
So I have been ‘off the grid’ for the past few days – on purpose and for great reason. I’ve had the pleasure of hosting some international members of my Tribe who visited my fabulous hometown.
For them it was a holiday, an opportunity to experience the delights of Melbourne – the coffee, the food, the wine, the sights and the shopping. However, it is not lost on me that I know they had so many tantalising options as potential long weekend destinations, yet they specifically picked my hometown to visit to spend time with me; and the fabulousness of Melbourne was just a nice added bonus for them!
I certainly don’t expect the members of my Tribe to visit me in person to make me feel supported, as the convenience of technology these days makes this easily possible. However, knowing that they care enough to make the effort to visit really touched me and was a great reminder that I have the right people in my Tribe (including those who are yet to visit Melbourne – while I cheekily try to lure you here to see this great city, I know it’s not always possible and I still value you greatly!).
What’s a Tribe you might ask? I define Tribe as the people you surround yourself with – it could be your very inner circle of partner and family, through to present and former colleagues, friends, those you interact with in hobbies, etc. Having a supportive Tribe who encourages you, listens to you with no judgement, supports you unconditionally along your life journey during the good times and the bad times is essential to your wellbeing.
Just imagine being surrounded by negative people who criticise you, put you down, have an aura of negativity and drain your energy – this isn’t a favourable resource to living your best life is it?
I am very purposeful as to who gains membership to my Tribe. My Tribe isn’t all just ‘high fives’ and naively endorsing whatever I do; but rather they take on the role of listener and wise counsel and we have some very open and constructive conversations – which makes me feel supported and motivated.
What about you? Does your Tribe lift you up to be the best you can be? I encourage you to take the time to think about your Tribe and whether the membership of your Tribe truly nourishes you so you can live your best life. If not, make some changes to ensure your Tribe is filled with the people who are your cheerleaders, confidants, great listeners and wise counsel. It’s your Tribe remember, so you control the membership!
Be around people who nourish you. This will assist you to live your best life and love your life.
