Talking with my friends this week about their Christmas breaks it’s made me think about business owners taking breaks. It’s my first Christmas as a business owner and it’s been a very different lead up to the end of the year for me – no getting my annual leave approved by the boss and winding down; it is instead full systems go as I’m getting the business ready for an exciting 2018!
This has really highlighted one of my big learnings from the year – I find it so easy to be fully absorbed and immersed in my business – largely because it’s something I am passionate about, I want it to succeed, and it is so energising to be doing something you genuinely love. If I’m not careful though continually thinking, living and breathing the business can come at a cost – not taking time out for myself can be a detriment to my health (both physical and mental), and also a detriment to my relationships as I neglect my family and friends.
I pause for a gentle reminder here….wasn’t having more flexibility and getting better balance in all components of my life one of the reasons I made the decision to have my own business? Hmmm…..what a timely prompt!
So despite how much I love doing what I do and all the things I am excited about that are coming up, I’ll be taking a break during the festive season to recharge and focus on my loved ones.
That to-do-list can wait until 2018.
Fellow business owners I hope you do the same – for the sake of your own wellness and that of your loved ones.
For those with businesses whose peak period is now over the festive season, I acknowledge we can’t all take a break at this time of year, but I hope you have scheduled a break in the new year when things quieten down a little!
I’ll be back coaching on 2 January; in the meantime though I’ll be very much enjoying the food of the festive season, spending focused quality time with my loved ones and taking some time out with my feet up engrossed in a (non-business related) book!
Best wishes for the festive season and here’s to an awesome 2018!
